FEBRUARY 14, 2020

Megan started her morning by scrolling through Jon’s online photo albums. “We sure had fun, didn’t we?” she confided.

Jon was hell-bent on living his best life, getting the most out of every moment and that’s so evident by looking back at all of the memories. Whether it was traveling abroad or right here at home, Jon’s outlook on life was infectious. His “black and white” candor offering the best sounding board for some of life’s dilemmas. His in-depth look and understanding of every facet of life, love, friendship, and family made you feel like a better person just by being around him.

Today we woke up hoping to help Megan shake off yesterday’s heaviness. A reminder to avoid social media’s constant reminder that it also happens to be Valentine’s Day didn’t hurt either. The morning started with Jon receiving his previously postponed bronchoscopy. Although Jon’s pulmonologist was hesitant, Jon’s lead doctor was confident he could perform the procedure with an additional tool not available to them yesterday. The procedure was performed successfully, they were able to remove “a lot of stuff” from his lungs with minimal bleeding. Having been to this rodeo before, Megan was smart to preemptively prepare herself for a less than positive morning round as, not surprisingly, Jon’s body tends to not react well to invasive procedures. As predicted, morning rounds were less than positive. Jon had a rough night last night. His team is starting to look for other sources of infection; originally thought to be his gallbladder or his lungs (both of which are infected) but his doctors aren’t convinced that’s the entire story. His white blood cell count shot up then came back down last night. They’re going to perform another ultrasound on his stomach today and let Megan know if it indicates anything of concern.

The last few days have been rough. The injuries Jon’s body has sustained are, at times, incomprehensible. His injuries are so great and his time is fleeting. How do you wrap your head around that? If this can happen to Jon, a strong, healthy, young, smart individual, it can happen to anyone.

The highlight of the last 48 hours though? Megan played their wedding song to Jon. To watch his eyes light up and see his jaw attempt to move to the lyrics...well, there really are no words. Thinking back to them dancing to that song at their wedding 10 years ago; the lyrics have never rang more true than during this very moment.

So hold your loved ones a little tighter this Valentine’s Day, and if you feel so inclined play this song for them in honor of Jon and Megan:

Stay with You
Song by John Legend
